Information & Service

The Museum

The Rhineland-Palatinate open-air museum shows in a distinctly colourful and ostensive way how everyday life in Rhineland-Palatinate was organised within the last five hundered years. How did people from Rhinehesse, the Eifel and Palatinate, on the banks of the Mosel, Nahe und Mittelrhein, and on top of the Hunsrück live, dwell and work?

In order to answer these questions as vividly and precisely as possible, historic buildings from different regions were removed brick by brick, and stone by stone within the last thirty years and rebuilt at the Rhineland-Palatinate open-air museum true to original and furnished in great detail afterwards.

36 buildings have emerged so far, which are situated in a scenic valley of the river Nahe according to the different landscapes the houses represent, and which are integrated into four villages.

A locksmith's workshop and a water mill, a barber's shop, a trader's shop, a butchery, a school and a bakery, vineyard houses and farmsteads invite to a trip to the past.

Gardens, fields, meadows, pastures, woods and a vineyard are located inbetween the villages. Moreover, different domestic animals and farm animals, like the rare Glan cattle, the precious German goat, ducks, chicken and geese are kept.
The Rhineland-Palatinate open-air museum is not only the most central, but also the biggest museum of its kind in Rhineland-Palatinate.

Service

Being a visitor- and family-friendly institution, the Rhineland-Palatinate open-air museum approximates its entry fees and opening hours to the needs and wishes of its visitiors.

The museum's restaurant caters for a wide range of hefty regional dishes. Furthermore, those who wish to have a picnic may use one of the numerous picnic spots.

Souvenirs, detailed literature, regional products like the delicious museum's honey or the popular wine „Museumsschoppen“, are available in the Museum's shop.

The Rhineland-Palatinate open-air museum is especially suited for families with children, but also for school trips and group travels.

As the ways are designed according to historical examples, they cause difficulties for wheelchairs and prams. Experience has shown that it is more convenient to follow the signposted circular walk ("Rundweg"
). Depending on one's interest, it takes at least about two hours to stroll through the facilities.
